Albrecht Durer

I just recently bought a large print of Albrecht Durer's Adam and Eve for my apartment. Tomorrow I will try to make a frame for it. Hold your thumbs.

The Pleasure of My Own Company

This all started because of a clerical error.

Without the clerical error, I wouldn't be thinking this way at all; I wouldn't have had time. I would have been too preoccupied with the new friends I was planning on making at Mensa, the international society of geniuses. I had taken their IQ test, but my score had come back missing a digit. Where was the 1 that should have been in front of the 90? I fell short of the genius category by a full 50 points, barely enough to qualify me to sharpen their pencils. Thus I was rejected form membership and facing a hopeless pile of red tape to correct the mistake.

Like This

If anyone asks you
how the perfect satisfaction
of all our sexual wanting
will look, lift your face
and say,

Like this.

When someone mentions the gracefulness
of the night sky, climb up on the roof
and dance and say,

Like this.

If anyone wants to know what "spirit" is,
or what "God’s fragrance" means,
lean your head toward him or her.
Keep your face there close.

Like this.

When someone quotes the old poetic image
about clouds gradually uncovering the moon,
slowly loosen knot by knot the strings
of your robe.

Like this.

If anyone wonders how Jesus raised the dead,
don’t try to explain the miracle.
Kiss me on the lips.

Like this. Like this.

When someone asks what it means
to "die for love," point
here.

If someone asks how tall I am, frown
and measure with your fingers the space
between the creases on your forehead.

This tall.

The soul sometimes leaves the body, the returns.
When someone doesn’t believe that,
walk back into my house.

Like this.

When lovers moan,
they’re telling our story.

Like this.

I am a sky where spirits live.
Stare into this deepening blue,
while the breeze says a secret.

Like this.

When someone asks what there is to do,
light the candle in his hand.

Like this.

How did Joseph’s scent come to Jacob?

Huuuuu.

How did Jacob’s sight return?

Huuuu.

A little wind cleans the eyes.

Like this.

When Shams comes back from Tabriz,
he’ll put just his head around the edge
of the door to surprise us

Like this.

Second Nature

These beautiful paintings are done with lacquer and enamel. Seeing them today at the Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery was absolutely awe inspiring. Unfortunately it is only on for one more day and I urge you to go see it.

The artist, Thierry Feuz, uses these flowers as a pretext to play with the unmixed colours. The organic changes of the colour intermingle on the canvas, bursting and pouring out into coloured plasmas that tumble and swell in a sometimes dangerous way. At one point the painting evolves into an epidermal pleating and at another it looks like a network of vessels, cellular tissues or veining.

Feuz studied at the Ecole Superior des Beaux Arts in Geneva. His work has been exhibited internationally at galleries in Brussels, Copenhagen, Geneva, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Vancouver and Zurich. Most recently he exhibited at the National Academy of Science, Washington, D.C.

Out of The Blue

I met Henry Roy (Purple, Vogue Paris, W Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Another Magazine) 2 years ago and the time I spent with his wife and him definitely changed my life.

Two days ago, he emailed me to tell me that one of the pictures he took from our photo shoot in Lesquiti is featured in his new book Out of the Blue.

Francisco Ribera

I bought three Francisco Ribera prints this weekend for my apartment. Three portraits of women sitting in a similar position, one with cherries in her lap, one with a crab in a basket on her lap, and one women in a pill box hat.

Miki's Back!

Today as I was coming home from work early, I couldn't stop thinking about my bestfriend Miki. I was thinking about how I never told her when I was coming back from Europe so that I could suprise her by calling her the day I arrived - especially since I came home early and we missed each other too much. I was thinking how nice it was of her to tell me exactly when she would be arriving in Vancouver, the minute she booked her flight. I tried to see if I could remember her phone number now that she had been gone for so many months in Berlin.

I saw that I had a message on my answering machine and checked the caller id to see who could have left it. I saw her Vancouver cell phone, and wondered what could be going on. She came home early and surprised me.

Laughter in the Dark

The original title of Laughter in the Dark was Камера Обскура, Kamera Obskura. Written by Vladimir Nabokov, it was released in 1932, translated into English as Camera Obscura in 1936, and retitled with the more well known Laughter in the Dark in 1938. With Laughter in the Dark, Nabokov tentatively tests the waters of the themes he so fully surrenders to in Lolita - as the book deals with the affections of a middle-aged man for a very young woman, which result in a mutually parasitic relationship. In 1955, Nabokov took this theme much further with Lolita, and it is interesting to note it was published in France under a psuedonym - knowing the theme was contraversial and inflammitory - but obviously not one he could escape exploring.

First Lines

Control is a curious thing, and in whose hands it rests is where the curiousity lies. Not lies like reposes, but lies like misleads, peaks intrigue, and deifnitely blurries judgement's eyes.
